Many early implementations of Ethernet OAM have been software based with minimal hardware assist. These software based implementations, while they are a necessary step in the evolution of the technology, cannot provide access to the full set of OAM features. Such software implementations cannot provide the same precision of OAM frame insertion and removal into and from a data stream, as that provided by a typical hardware implementation. Hence, accuracy of KPIs becomes a significant drawback of software OAM implementations.
